Excalibur is the UK’s largest surviving estate of postwar prefab houses, and is a unique slice of 20th-century social history. 187 compact bungalows were erected from factory-built panels by German and Italian prisoners of war in 1945 and 1946. Today some have fallen into disrepair, but others have a beauty and individuality that creates a quite and charming place to live.
Unfortunately the estate is due to be demolished, being replaced with modern housing. Only 6 will be saved, after they received Grade-II listing in 2010.
